titleOfInvention Sensors
abstract 1528183 Electro-chemical sensor GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 Sept 1975 [1 Nov 1974] 38502/75 Heading G1N A probe for simultaneously determining more than one ion or gas in a fluid sample comprises at least two complete measuring sensors. The preferred construction is for two longitudinally separated sensors, each with two electrodes electrolyte and membrane which can determine CO 2 , O 2 and, with an external electrode, pH. As shown, the probe has an O 2 and pH sensor 10 and a CO 2 sensor 11. A rod of Ta, W or Mo 12 has a bore end and is insulated (14) from a silver or silver containing tube 15 having sections 16, 30 converted to silver halide (other than fluoride). The sections 16, 30 are mutually insulated (17). A second tube 32 of Ir or Pd has, at its end a coating of its oxide and is insulated (31) from silver tube 15. Electrode 12 and 16 contact an electrolyte 16 and are enclosed, with the electrolyte by an O 2 and H<SP>+</SP> permeable membrane 19. Electrodes 30 and 33 contact electrolyte 34 and are enclosed by a CO 2 permeable membrane 35. At the end 13 of the probe, the tubes and rod are exposed for contacting measuring circuits. Sensor 10 The electrolyte 18 comprises halide ions and is buffered to a pH of about 5. It is preferably immobilized by starch or methylated cellulose. The membrane 19 is preferably H<SP>+</SP> selectively permeable but may also be permeable to K<SP>+</SP>, Na<SP>+</SP>, Ca<SP>++</SP>, Mg<SP>++</SP>, NH 4 <SP>+</SP>, Cl<SP>-</SP>, lactate or pyrovate for measuring these ions. Suitable membrane materials are disclosed. Sensor 11 The electrolyte 34 preferably comprises bicarbonate ions and sodium chloride, is preferably immobilized and may be iso-osmatic with blood. The CO 2 permeable membrane 35 may be a polysiloxone-polycarbonate block copolymer. Insulation The insulation material may be PTFE, polyester, a PTFE/PE copolymer, polypropylene, polyethybose, glazed paint, epoxy resin or PVC. Measurement Oxygen is determined between electrodes 12 and 16 and carbon dioxide between electrodes 30 and 33 pH is determined between electrode 16 and a further silver/silver halide electrode in the solution under test.
