1526865 Ferrofluids INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 June 76 [30 June 1975] 25781/76 Heading B1V [Also in Divisions Cl, C4 and C5] An emulsion having continuous and discontinuous phases comprises (a) water and (b) a water-immiscible organic top liquid phase comprising a liquid non-polar aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon and a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon in such proportions that the density of the phases (a) and (b) are substantially equal, either (a) or (b) containing a surface active agent and having colloidal ferromagnetic particles suspended thereon, the non-polar and halogenated hydrocarbons being mutually soluble and compatible with the surface-active agent. The emulsion may be of the type oilon-water or water-on-oil. The specified ferromagnetic material is Fe 3 O 4 (magnetite). The preferred surface-active agent is oleic acid. |
