titleOfInvention Stabilisation of organopolysiloxanes
abstract 1521572 Stabilization of crganopolysiloxanes WACKER-CHEMIE GmbH 11 May 1976 [30 May 1975] 19364/76 Heading C3T A process for stabilizing the viscosity of an organopolysiloxane manufactured in the presence of a phosphorus chloronitride generally by the condensation and/or equilibration of organosilicon compounds containing siliconbonded oxygen atoms, comprises treating the organopolysiloxane with ammonia or an amine of the general formula:- where X denotes a hydrogen atom or a radical of one of the formulae -OCH3, -N(CH3)2, -C(CH3)3, -C(CH3)2NHY and -OC(CH3)3; Y denotes a hydrogen atom or -SI(CH3)3; and n is 0-3, in an amount of from 1-6À4 moles per mole of phosphorus chloronitride (calculated as PNCl2) used in the manufacture of the organopolysiloxane. The organopolysiloxane may be of the formula where R denotes an optionally substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R<0> denotes H or an optionally substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radical, -A denotes H or -SIR<1>3, where R<1> is R or an optionally substituted hydrocarbonoxy radical and m is at least 50. Preferably at least 50% or R and R<0> are CH3 and any remaining radicals are vinyl or phenyl. The organopolysiloxane preferably has a viscosity of from 10<3> to 5 Î 10<7> cP at 25‹ C. Suitable organosilicon compounds containing Si-bonded oxygen atoms for preparing the organopolysiloxane are those of the formula optionally in admixture with where p is 1-1,000, R and R<0> in the Examples being CH3. The phosphorus chloronitride is preferably one that has been prepared by the reaction of phosphorus pentachloride and ammonium chloride in a molar ratio of 2 : 1 and may be one of the formula Suitable amines are t-butylamine, N-trimethylsilyl-t-butylamino, t-octylamino, N-trimethylsilyl-t-octylamine, 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptylamine-(4), 2-amino-2-methyl-1-methoxy-propane or 2,4-diamino-2,4-dimethyl-pentane. The amine is preferably used in the form of a solution in water, an alcohol, hydrocarbon, halohydrocarbon, ether or ketone. The ammonia may be used in the form of a solution as above or in another amine used according to the invention, in gaseous form or it may be generated in situ. The process may be carried out at a temperature of from 0‹ to 200‹ C., either continuously or discontinuously.
