titleOfInvention | Surface of a reinforcing material for subsequent incorporation in a plastics matrix |
abstract | 1520856 Modifying inorganic material VITROFIL SpA 20 Dec 1976 [18 Dec 1975 (2)] 53055/76 Heading C1M [Also in Division C3] A process of coating inorganic reinforcing material, e.g. glass to provide for improved adhesion between the reinforcing material and a plastics matrix in which the reinforcing material is to be incorporated, comprising treating the reinforcing material surface with at least one organic compound of a tetravalent metal selected from zirconium and tin in the presence of water vapour and at 250-650 C., said organic compound being hydrolysable in the presence of water vapour in said temperature range, applying on to the reinforcing material surface so treated, at a temperature lower than 250 C., at least one silane coupling agent, and drying the so treated reinforcing material. The process may produce a reinforcing material grafted with an organosiloxyzirconoxane or organosiloxystannoxane polymer. The tetravalent zirconium compound may be zirconium tetraacetate; esters of Zr(OH) 4 with glycerine, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and mannitol; aminoalkyl zirconates and condensed esters of zirconium acid complexed with amino-alcohols and polvalent alcohols. Similar tin compounds may be used. Numerous examples of silane coupling agents are given. The specific examples describe the treatment of γ glass microspheres with zirconium tetraacetate using y-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as coupling agent (1); glass yarn with the ester of zirconium acid with sorbitol using γ- methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (2); glass yarn with isopropylzirconate polymer complexed with triethanolamine and glycerin using vinyltriethoxysilane (3); glass yarn with zirconium tetraacetate using y-methacryloxy-propyltrimethoxysilane (4); and glass microspheres with diisopropylditriethanolamine stannate using y-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. |
