titleOfInvention | Process for dissolving radioactive corrosion products from internal surfaces of a nuclear reactor |
abstract | 1516914 Decontaminating nuclear reactors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 4 May 1976 [8 May 1975] 18148/76 Heading G6C Radioactive fission by-products, in particular cobalt 58 resulting from irradiation of the nickel vessel wall, are removed from the internal surfaces of a water-cooled reactor prior to refuelling by reducing the temperature and pressure of the circulating coolant, introducing a solution containing hydrogen peroxide to the coolant and increasing its pressure thereby accelerating solution of said by-products, reducing the pressure of the coolant to atmosphere, removing the dissolved by-products by ionexchange and returning the coolant to the reactor. The hydrogen peroxide solution is preferably added to a borated aqueous coolant purged of hydrogen which would react with part of the hydrogen peroxide. |
