titleOfInvention Thermosetting high solid coating composition
abstract 1514818 Melamine - formaldehyde/alkyd high solids coating compositions KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 5 June 1975 [6 June 1974] 24325/75 Heading C3R A coating composition contains, per 100 p.b.w. of (a) plus (b): (a) 60-80 p.b.w. of an alkyd resin of fatty acid content of 10-20 wt.% and phenyl group content 10-25 wt.% and having a hydroxy equivalent (H) and molar ratio of polycarboxylic acid/polyhydric alcohol (R) falling on or within the tetragon defined on a co-ordinate system with H as abscissa and R as ordinate by the points (300, 0À700), (200, 0À775), (500, 0À775) and (500, 0À850); (b) 20-40 p.b.w. of a melamine resin of which at least 50 wt.% is a hexakis(alkoxymethyl) melamine in which 2-6 alkoxy groups have 2-4 C atoms each, any others being methoxy groups; (c) 0À05-1À00 p.b.w. of an aliphatic or aromatic sulphonic acid or amine salt thereof; and (d) 20-80 p.b.w. of a solvent for (a), (b) and (c). The melamine resin (b) may also contain a C1-4 alkylated melamine resin having fewer than 5À5 methylol groups on average. In examples 1-4 alkyd resins A-D are prepared from 0À5- 0À7 molar parts of phthalic anhydride with 0À12 to 0À26 molar parts of a tetra-/hexahydrophthalic anhydride mixture or adipic acid with a total of one molar part of trimethylol-ethane or -propane or pentaerythritol and neopentyl, ethylene, 1 : 3-butylene or neopentyl/hexamethylene glycol, to which is added 0À17-0À2 molar parts of coconut or safflower oil fatty acid and 0À1 molar part of benzoic or p-t-butylbenzoic acid; in Example 14 alkyd N is obtained from 0À04 mols soyabean oil, 0À386 mols each of isophthalic acid and phthalic anhydride, 0À12 mols trimethylolpropane and 0À84 mols neopentyl glycol. In Examples 15-17 MF resins A and B are obtained from hexakismethoxymethylmelamine and ethanol or butanol and contain 2À3 ethyl and 4À1 butyl ether groups respectively, while resin C is obtained from melamine, formalin and butanol and has 5À1 methylol groups per molecule. In Examples 18-22 melamine resins A or B or A/C in 1 : 1 or 2 : 1 wt. ratio are mixed with alkyds A, B or C in 3 : 7, 1 : 3 or 35 : 65 wt. ratio, with 0À05-0À6 p.h.r. ptoluene sulphonic acid or its morpholine salt or methanesulphonic acid and 33 or 67 p.h.r. of an 8 : 2 xylene/butanol mixture: in examples 32 and 33 7 : 3 mixtures of alkyds B or N with melamine resin A are blended with 100 p.h.r. TiO2, 67 p.h.r. of 8 : 2 xylene/butanol and 0À4 or 0À5 p.h.r. of p-toluene-sulphonic acid. The compositions are applied to epoxy-primed mild steel sheets.
