titleOfInvention Olefine polymerisation catalyst containing transition metal compound
abstract 1510643 Olefine polymerization catalyst IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974] 50250/74 Heading C3P A ground product suitable as a component of the polymerization catalyst used to polymerize olefines consists of a solid material containing a solid compound of a transition metal of Groups IVA to VIA of the Periodic Table, a Lewis Base compound associated with said solid material and 0À1-5À0 moles of propylene irreversibly taken up for each mole of the transition metal compound present in the solid material. The transition metal compound and Lewis Base compound are ground together and subsequently exposed to propylene. Suitable transition metal compounds are ZrCl4, VCl3, VOCl2 or TiCl3 whilst the Lewis Base compound is preferably an organophosphorus compound, e.g. octamethylpyrophosphoramide, but other conventional Lewis Bases are also listed. A metal halide such as aluminium chloride mav also be ground with the solid material. The treatment of the ground material with propylene can be carried out by contacting in the grinding apparatus or by suspending it in an inert diluent and passing propylene into the suspension. To the solid material containing the solid transition metal compound and treated with propylene there may be added one or more further compounds, e.g. an organometallic compound of aluminium or a non-transition metal of Groups Ia and IIa, to provide an olefine polymerization catalyst. In Examples 1 to 9 a commerical titanium chloride is ground with octamethylpyrophosphoramide and exposed to propylene. Subsequently triethyl aluminium optionally with diethylaluminium chloride is introduced into a polymerization flask containing propylene, to which hexamethylphosphoric or N,N,N<1>,N<1>-tetramethylethyldiamine as Lewis Base is optionally added, and the treated TiCl3 is then added after which the propylene is polymerized. In Examples 10 and 11 polypropylene is produced using aluminium triethyl mixed with either octamethylpyrophosphoramide or hexamethylphosphoric triamide and 1,3,5-cycloheptatriene.
