abstract 1510256 Beta - methylthiopropionaldehyde RHONE-POULENC INDUSTRIES 18 June 1976 [20 June 1975] 25461/76 Heading C2C A process for the manufacture of betamethylthiopropionaldehyde which comprises: (i) absorbing a gas mixture containing acrolein which has been obtained by catalytic oxidation of propylene, by previously-prepared betamethylthiopropionaldehyde and (ii) reacting the acrolein absorbed by the beta-methylthiopropionaldehyde with methylmercaptan at a temperature of 10‹ to 50‹C., the hemithioacetal of beta-methylthiopropionaldehyde being formed during the reaction, and in which, prior to the absorption, the gas mixture is substantially freed firstly from any acrylic acid and then from any water which it contains, and the hemithioacetal content in the reaction mixture is kept at above 0 and up to and including 1% by weight. The hemithioacetal concentration may be measured potentiometrically and maintained within the required limits by adjustment of the flow rates of reactants.
