titleOfInvention | Sunburn dosimeter |
abstract | 1507486 Ultraviolet dosimeter AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 18 April 1975 [9 May 1974] 16234/75 Heading H5R To indicate the sunburning dose of U.V. (290-320 nm) received by the skin from sun or other source, a disposable dosimeter element 17 comprising a compound which colours progressively and irreversibly on exposure to the U.V. is exposed simultaneously, having adjacent colour standards 18 for visual comparison. The compound may be dispersed in a solid polymer, e.g. polycarbonate or in solution in a container. The standards should have appearance similar to the sensitive element. If the compound is sensitive to wavelengths outside the required range, those unwanted can be filtered, possibly by the polymer carrying the compound. If shorter wavelengths. e.g. 200-290 nm may be encountered, the compound may be chosen to be sensitive also to these radiations, the carrier polymer being chosen to be non-absorbing. If the colouring of the outer layers of the element retards U.V. exposure of the under layers, change with time may tend towards logarithmic. Multiple standards may be supplied to correspond with more or less sensitive subjects. Compounds quoted are 3'-[p-dimethylamino)phenyl]-spiro-[fluorene-9,4'-oxazolidine]-2',5'-dione changing on exposure to 320 nm or shorter U.V. to p-dimethylamino-N-fluoren-9-ylidine aniline: and 1-acetoxy-2,2-dicyano-1,2-dihydro-4-methyl-1- phenyl-9-xanthenone changing, on exposure to light both below and above 320 nm and therefore requiring a filter absorbing above 320 nm, into orange-yellow (2-[3-(a-acetoxybenzylidene)-3.4- dihydro-4-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-2-ylidene]propylidene} malononitrile. |
