titleOfInvention Photocurable electroconductive coating composition
abstract 1504364 Antistatic coatings NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 1 May 1975 [2 May 1974] 18309/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] Fibrous materials are provided with antistatic coatings by coating the material with an electroconductive composition comprising (A) an acrylic monomer devoid of groups which inhibit free radical polymerisation and having at least one terminal acrylic or substituted acrylic group, (B) a free radical polymerisation initiator photo-activatable by actinic radiation having a wavelength not greater than 4000A, the initiator being present as a separate compound or in chemical combination with monomer (A), and (C) a copolymerisable monomer selected from alkali metal salts of acrylic, methacrylic or vinylbenzenesulphonic acid, and salts of alkylsubstituted quaternary ammonium compounds wherein at least one of the monomers of (A) or (C) contains more than one terminal ethylenically unsaturated group; and curing the coating by exposure to actinic radiation. Monomer (A) is suitably acrylic or methacrylic acid or an ester thereof, or a low molecular weight polyester containing terminal acrylic groups. Initiator (B) may be a benzoin compound, a benzophenone compound, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, phenanthraquinone or a polyhalogenated aromatic compound. When (A) and (B) are chemically combined, the (B) component may be a polyhalogenated aromatic carboxylic acid or a half ester of maleic acid with a benzoin compound, which component may be incorporated into a polyester containing acrylic groups. The compositions may optionally include additives such as solvents, fillers, polymerisation inhibitors, pigments and dyes. In an example a composition comprising acrylic acid, benzoin butyl ether and N, N, N-triallyl N-methyl ammonium chloride is sprayed onto nylon cloth and the coating is cured by exposure to ultra-violet light.
