titleOfInvention Antistatic coating compositions
abstract 1503906 Antistatic coatings AGFA-GEVAERT 29 April 1975 [14 May 1974] 21324/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A polyester film is coated with an antistatic layer by applying to the unstretched or monoaxially stretched film an aqueous coating composition comprising, after drying, 30-80% by weight of an electroconductive polymer containing at least 50% of recurring units comprising anionic or cationic groups, 10-40% by weight of a stretch-improving agent and 10-40% by weight of an inert filler material, drying the coating and stretching the coated film biaxially or in a direction perpendicular to the first stretching operation, and then heat setting the stretched coated film. The polyester is preferably polyethylene terephthalate, or may be a polyester resulting from polycondensation of glycol or mixtures of glycols with terephthalic acid or of terephthalic acid with isophthalic acid, diphenic acid or sebacic acid.- The electroconductive polymer may be a polystyrene sulphonic acid, a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid or a sodium salt of ethylene-maleic acid copolymer. Other polymeric sulphonate free acids or salts, polyethyleneimines, and various quaternised polymers of heterocyclic amines may also be used. As stretch-improving agents, aliphatic polyhydroxy compounds such as glycerols and other polyols, or caprolactam or N, N'-dimethylurea are used. Alternatively aliphatic or sulphonic acids may be used. The inert filler is preferably a finely divided silica produced by in situ hydrolysis of various silanes. Other fillers include inorganic pigments and polymeric materials highly dispersed. The coating composition may also contain small amounts of waxy materials. The coating may be applied by spray, brush, roller, doctor blade, air brush or wiping. The opposite side of the film may be provided with a subbing layer and a light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer. Alternatively the 'antistatic layer may be coated onto both sides of the film.
