titleOfInvention | Flame retardant mixtures of chloroethyl phosphonate monomer and high boiling phosphonates and polymers containing them |
abstract | 1503537 Chlorine - containing phosphonate ester mixtures MOBIL OIL CORP 5 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 24272/75 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a flame-retardant mixture comprising from 1 to 75% by weight of the monomer compound and from 99 to 25% by weight of a high boiling phosphonate comprising predominantly the compound The mixture may be obtained by thermally isomerizing tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphite at below 180‹ C. and separating the product, e.g. by fractional distillation, and, if necessary, blending separated portions of the product, to give the specified mixture comprising the monomer and high boiling phosphonate. The thermal isomerization is suitably effected by adding tris- (2-chloroethyl) phosphite to a product heel from a previous run at a temperature below 180‹ C. The initial product before separation generally comprises about 65% by weight of the monomer compound and this product (after stripping off low boiling by-products), and the mixtures obtained after subsequent separation and, if necessary, blending of the separated portions, may be used as flame-retardants for a wide variety of organic polymeric materials. |
