titleOfInvention | Process for producing microporous sheet materials |
abstract | 1501244 Microporous polyurethane coatings TEIJIN CORDLEY Ltd 17 Sept 1975 [3 Oct 1974] 38233/75 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A microporous sheet material is produced by (1) preparing a resin suspension in an organic solvent of boiling point not more than 120‹C, the solubility at 25‹C of water in the solvent being 1-50 g per 100 g of solvent, the resin being a polyurethane elastomer containing 2-25% by weight of polyoxyethylene segments which may optionally be mixed with a polyurethane elastomer not containing such segments and consisting of 20- 85% by weight of a part soluble in the organic solvent and 80-15% of an insoluble part; (2) mixing the organic solvent suspension with not less than 50% by weight (based on the resin) of water to form a water-in-oil dispersion; (3) coating or impregnating a substrate with the resulting dispersion; (4) optionally evaporating a part of the organic solvent; (5) contacting the coated or impregnated substrate with a coagulant having a "coagulation value" (as defined in the specification) of not more than 25; and (6) drying the product. The substrate may be a woven. non-woven or knitted fabric or may be a release support such as plastics film, silicone-coated paper or polished glass or metal. The solvent may particularly be methyl ethyl ketone, methyl acetate or mixtures of THF with methyl ethyl ketone. methyl iso-butyl ketone or n-hexane, other ketones. esters and mixtures also being specified. The coagulant is a C 1-8 alcohol or a hydrocarbon such as hexane, heptane or octane. The resin may additionally comprise up to 20.% by weight of PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, acrylate or methacrylate copolymer, polystyrene, ethylene terephthalate-isophthalate copolymer, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose or butyl cellulose. In the Examples, a needled polyethylene terephthalate fabric is both impregnated and then coated with the polyurethane dispersion and may also be provided with a further coating of pigmented polyesterurethane, which further coating may be provided with a leather-like pattern. |
