titleOfInvention Determination of biocides in liquids
abstract 1500850 Determination of biocides J R SCHNEIDER CO Inc 6 May 1976 [19 June 1975 22 March 1976] 18685/76 Heading G1B A biocide capable of liberating formaldehyde when mixed with a modified Schiffs' reagent in aqueous strong acid solution is determined by mixing a sample of liquid containing the biocide, aqueous dilute strong acid and the modified Schiffs' reagent solution and observing the colour developed, the modified Schiffs' reagent being an aqueous solution of rosanilin hydrochloride (basic fuschin) with sodium bisulphite and hydrochloric acid. If the test liquid is an oil-water emulsion, the emulsion is first broken with the aid of for example an acid solution of magnesium sulphate, the oil phase is extracted into a C4 to C 10 alcohol and the test is carried out on the aqueous phase. A test pack comprises a container 13 for the modified Schiffs' reagent, a series of test tubes 16 each containing a strongly acid aqueous phase which includes an emulsion breaker and a non-water-miscible oil solvent, and a standard graph or a series of colour chips 15.
