titleOfInvention Soldering iron for simultaneously soldering a plurality of wires to respective metal liners each of which is located in a respective channel of a connector
abstract 1499678 Soldering; stripping and soldering conductors BUNKER RAMO CORP 14 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 1568/75 Headings B3A and B3R A soldering iron for simultaneously soldering a plurality of conductors 22 to metal liners 24 in channels 26 of a connector 20 comprises a plate 34 of heat conducting material, a plurality of projections 38 on an end face of the plate, each having sides converging towards the extremity of the projection and plated with a solder wettable oxidation resistant material. In an embodiment the iron comprises a copper plate 34 having a main body 36 and projections 38 which are triangular in end view with sides 40 converging into points. The sides of the projections are plated with electroless nickel 44, and the remainder of the plate is plated with hard chromium 46. A number of wires from a multi wire cord 4 attached to a stand 6 are placed individually into grooves of a jig 10 with the ends of the wires held by a holder 12. A cutting blade 14 and stripping blade 16 are lowered to cut the wires to length and strip them of insulation. The stripped wires are then inserted, while the cord is still held by stand 6, into metal liners 24 in channels 26 in the connector 20 and flux cored solder (60 tin, 40 lead) 5 is placed over the top of the liners. The heated projections of the plate are then lowered to melt the solder and cause soldering between the liners and stripped wires. The projections may be shallower than shown, may be spaced by recesses, may be curved in end view at their ends remote from the plate or may be curved to form together a sinusoidal curve. The whole of the projections may be plated with electroless nickel and the resin of tension may may be plated with hard chromium. A known soldering iron with a plurality of rectangular projections is described.
