abstract 1499378 Flame drills TSENTRAL GEOFIZICHE TREST 11 April 1975 14893/75 Heading E1F An apparatus for forming holes in geological formations comprises an elongate body containing a high pressure gas generator, the body having a head which, in use of the apparatus, is the leading portion of said body, the head including a group of jet nozzles communicating with the gas generator to create jets for opening up the hole ahead of and around the head, said group of nozzles including a central nozzle located on the longitudinal axis of said body at the extremity of the head and a plurality of rows of nozzles located on imaginary circles around and spaced apart along the longitudinal axis of the body, the spacing between any adjacent pair of said rows of nozzles in a projection upon a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said body being 4 to 7 times greater than the mean critical diameter of the nozzles of said adjacent pairs of said rows of nozzles and the spacing between any two adjacent nozzles in each row being equal to 4 to 7 critical diameters of the nozzles of said respective row.
