titleOfInvention | Preparation of solid reducing agents and their use in the production of olefin polymerisation catalysts |
abstract | 1498141 Polymerized olefin polymerization catalyst component NAPHTACHIMIE 11 Aug 1975 [14 Aug 1974] 33397/75 Heading C3P A solid olefin polymerization catalyst component is obtained by (a) polymerizing an olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising solid particles of a transition metal compound and an organomagnesium compound under specified conditions which yield a reducing solid with a small amount of polymer associated therewith and (b) reducing a further transition metal compound with the product of step (a). The component may be obtained by using an olefin as such or, if a halohydrocarbon is employed instead, it may be prepared in situ by a dismutation reaction with the organomagnesium material. The organomagnesium compound may also be formed in situ from magnesium and a halohydrocarbon. The catalyst component may be combined with the usual organometallic compounds to form the catalyst. The component may also be treated with materials such as water or alcohols before step (b) is effected. In examples, the catalyst components are formed by polymerizing ethylene in solution, in n-heptane in the presence of hydrogen and of a propoxychlorotitanium (in spherical particulate form) and ethyl magnesium chloride, to yield the polymeric reducing solid in the form of small spheres. This component is then (i) combined with dipropoxytitanium dichloride and ethyl chloride in heptane together with i-Bu 3 Al, or (ii) treated with water or n-butanol, and then combined with TiCl 4 , together with i-Bu 3 Al, and the resulting catalysts used for the solution polymerization of ethylene in the presence of hydrogen. |
