titleOfInvention Apparatus for irradiating flowable substance
abstract 1497987 Irradiating fluent material SULZER BROS Ltd 27 Aug 1976 35761/76 Heading H5R An irradiation plant for subjecting sewage to nuclear radiation comprises an irradiation chamber 2 containing elongated radiation sources 14 held in a cylindrical array by a double-walled cylindrical carrier 15, the sewage being pumped by a rotor 24 so that it rises up the inside of the carrier 15 and flows down the outside via semicircular passages 18, the carrier 15 being held by a support 5, 6 above which there is a screening chamber 1 filled with water and which communicates with the inter-wall space of the carrier 15. Sewage enters at 34 and leaves via a valve 41. The radiation sources 14 can be removed and replaced through passages 21 and stored in a pit 50 in the screening chamber. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the passages 18 are replaced by passages (72) through the top of the cylindrical carrier 15, the upper end of the irradiation chamber is domed to prevent the accumulation of floating material and sewage enters the apparatus centrally above the pump rotor.
