titleOfInvention | Radiation-cured coatings |
abstract | 1497743 Radiation curable coatings UNION CARBIDE CORP 11 Feb 1975 [12 Feb 1974] 5757/75 Heading C3P Coatings curable by radiation comprise a monomer, oligomer or polymer containing a (meth)acryloyl or (meth)acrylonitrile grouping in the molecule and, as fluidity or flow improver, 0À1-10% by weight of either (A) a silane of the formula R-Si-(OR<SP>1</SP>) 3 or (B) a reaction product of 2 moles of an acid CH 2 =CZCOOH and an amino-silane H 2 NR<SP>11</SP>-Si-(OR<SP>1</SP>) 3 where R is vinyl, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, phenyl, Z is H or methyl, R<SP>11</SP> is C 1 -C 6 alkylene, and each R<SP>1</SP> is individually C 1 -C 6 alkyl, alkoxyalkyl having up to 8 carbon atoms in total, or acyl having up to 5 carbon atoms. The coatings may also include photo-initiators, pigments, fillers, wetting agents, flatting agents, crosslinking agents &c. Curing may be effected with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation, e.g. with an argon swirl-flow plasma arc or with ultra violet light. In examples the acrylic component used is (a) a mixture of neopentyl glycol diacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, 2- hydroxyethyl acrylate and an adduct of 2 - hydroxyethyl acrylate, tetramethylhexamethylene diisocyanate and 2 - hydroxypropyl acrylate, (b) a mixture similar to (a) except that the adduct is replaced by a urethane acrylate derived from polycaprolactone diol, isophorone diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, and (c) a mixture of 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, isodecyl acrylate, neopentyl glycol diacrylate and methyl-(carbamylethyl)acrylate; and the silane component is selected from vinyl tri - (methoxyethoxy)silane, methyltriethoxysilane, a reaction product of gamma - aminopropyltriethoxysilane and acrylic acid, gammamethacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane and Coatings are applied to steel panels and birch plywood. |
