titleOfInvention Glycerol derivatives and herbicidal uses thereof
abstract 1496354 Glycerol derivatives SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 19 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 7902/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises 2-alkyl glycerol derivatives of formula wherein R represents an alkyl group; and X, Y and Z individually represent a hydrogen atom, or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, acyl or carbamoyl group; provided that (a) at least one of X, Y and Z is an aralkyl group and (b) when one of X, Y and Z represent a hydrogen atom or an acyl group the other two do not. These compounds may be obtained by reacting a mono- or di-hydroxy compound of formula wherein R is an alkyl group, and one or two of the groups P, Q and S is/are an aralkyl group and the remaining one or two groups is/are hydrogen atoms with a compound of formula wherein Y<SP>1</SP> is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl group. The intermediate 2-methylglycerol is prepared in Example I by the oxidation of methallyl alcohol using H 2 O 2 /tungstic acid.
