titleOfInvention | Production of methacrylic and acrylic acid and derivatives thereof |
abstract | 1492338 Acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters NIPPON KAYAKU KK 20 May 1976 [2 June 1975 (2)] 20954/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Methacrylic acid and a methacrylate, or acrylic acid and an acrylate are prepared by reacting methacrolein or acrolein respectively with an aliphatic alcohol and molecular oxygen in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst containing, palladium, phosphorus and oxygen. Antimony may also be present if desired. The catalyst life may be prolonged by supplementing the phosphorus content continuously or intermittently by phosphorus acid or a phosphorus compound capable of forming a phosphoric acid. A preferred catalyst is Pd a P b Sb c O d where a is 1, b is 1 to 42, c is 0 to 15 and d is determined by valency of the elements. A solid carrier such as silica solution or gel, silicon carbide, α-alumina, bubble stone and aluminium powder may be used. Examples describe the use of methanol and ethanol as the alcohols in the preparation of ethyl and methyl acrylates and methacrylates. |
