titleOfInvention Treatment of underwater surfaces
abstract 1491356 Polyionene coating materials BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 24 March 1976 [14 April 1975] 15203/75 Heading C3R To reduce fouling and corrosion of underwater surfaces they are coated with a paint comprising a polyionene dissolved or dispersed in a polymeric filmforming paint base or an ionene copolymer which is itself film-forming. The repeating ionene unit has the formula where R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are organic groups, and the polymer is obtained by reacting a diamine R<SP>2</SP> 2 N-R-NR<SP>2</SP> 2 with a dihalide Hal-R<SP>1</SP>-Hal. When making copolymers a diamine or dihalide having a reactive group, e.g. a double bond, an hydroxy-alkyl group or an epoxy-alkyl group, may be used and the preformed polyionene then may be cross-linked with another reactive material. In examples polyionenes are obtained by reacting tetramethyl ethylene diamine with 1,6 - dibromohexane, with 1,4 - dichlorobutene - 2, with 1,4 - dichloro - 2,3 - epoxybutane and with a mixture of 1,4-dichloro-2,3- epoxy - butane and dichlorobutene - 2, the last polyionene being mixed with a polyamide curing agent and coated on steel plates; some of the other polyionenes are mixed with a polyester and with an epoxy-coal tar coating composition and coated on metal plates.
