abstract 1490074 Stabilizing polymers RAYCHEM CORP 11 Oct 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 23125/77 Divided out of 1490073 Heading C3P Irradiated polymers may be stabilized with antioxidant compositions comprising (a) a hydroxy aromatic compound containing at least one sulphur atom and (b) an organic phosphonic acid or mono- or diester or salt thereof. Alternatively the groups may be present in a single compound. The polymer, which may be crosslinked, may be a polyolefin, copolymer of ethylene with vinyl acetate or an acrylic ester, polyvinyl or polyvinylidene halide, chlorinated polyethylene, acrylic polymer, polyether or polyester, and may be made into shaped articles, particularly heat recoverable articles. Examples describe the stabilizing of irradiated polyethylene with antioxidant mixtures comprising (b) 2,4,6 - tris - (diallylphosphonato) - 1,3,5- triazine, bis - (# - hydroxyethyl vinylphosphonatoethyl) vinyl phosphonate or di-n-octadecyl - (3 - t - butyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - methylbenzyl)phosphonate together with (a) 2,2<SP>1</SP>-thiobis - (4 - methyl - 6 - t - butylphenol), 4,4<SP>1</SP> - thiobis - (6 - t - butyl - m - cresol) or oligomers thereof, a hindered phenol cyanurate containing sulphur, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - thiobis - (6 - t - butyl - o - cresol), 1,1<SP>1</SP> - thiobis - naphthol or bis - [(3,5 - di - tbutyl - 4 - hydroxyphenol) propionyl - 2 - oxyethyl sulphide.
