titleOfInvention Water swellable poly(alkylene oxide)
abstract 1489965 Polyalkylene oxide UNION CARBIDE CORP 29 Oct 1975 [30 Oct 1974] 44492/75 Heading C3R Water-swellable poly-(alkylene oxide) (I) is prepared by introducing into a reaction zone a mixture of I, having M.W. # 100,000, and an inert hydrocarbon solvent containing a free radical catalyst, e.g. acetyl peroxide. Acrylic acid (II) is added to the reaction zone which is heated at 40-80‹ C. for a time sufficient to obtain water-swellable I. II may be added incrementally, e.g. over 3-5 hours. The solvent may be aliphatic or a mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The ratio of solvent to I may be 3 : 1 to 10 : 1. From 0À005 to 2À5% (based on the weight of I) of catalyst may be used. The product may be partially neutralized, e.g. to pH 5À5-6À0 with organic or inorganic bases. Uses.-Agricultural hydrogels; baby diapers.
