titleOfInvention Purification of 3alpha,7alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholanic acid
abstract 1489839 Chenodeoxycholic acid INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 May 1975 [7 May 1974] 19262/75 Heading C2U Chenodeoxycholic acid is treated to remove entrapped organic solvent of crystallization, e.g. by (i) dissolution in aqueous alkali and precipitation with acid; or (ii) dissolution in an alcohol and evaporation to dryness; or (iii) drying under vacuum at elevated temperature (e.g. 85-100‹ C./2 mm. Hg). The product has a m.p. of 142-145‹ C. The initial chenodeoxycholic acid is isolated from bile, purified and converted to solvates with ethyl acetate, hexane, heptane and C 5-7 cycloalkanes as described in Specifications 1,450,939 and 1,489,840. Oral compositions for dissolution of cholesterol gallstones comprise chenodeoxycholic acid treated as above and a carrier.
