abstract 1488464 2-Phenyl-indole derivatives LABAZ 19 March 1976 [21 March 1975] 11306/76 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Novel 2-phenyl-indole derivatives of the general formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or (C 1 -C 12 ) alkoxy; R 2 , R 3 and R 5 are hydrogen, (C 1 -C 3 ) alkyl or (C 1 -C 12 ) alkoxy, or R 3 and R 5 may be hydroxy; R 4 is hydrogen, hydroxy, (C 1 -C 3 ) alkyl or (C 2 -C 12 ) alkoxy, and R 6 is hydrogen or (C 1 -C 3 ) alkyl, provided that (i) at least one of R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 is other than hydrogen or alkyl when R 1 is hydrogen, (ii) at least one of R 4 , R 5 and R 6 is other than hydrogen, and (iii) at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 5 and R 6 is other than hydrogen when R 4 is hydroxy, are prepared by either (a) reacting an acetophenone derivative of the general formula with an aniline derivative of the formula or (b) cyclizing a substituted acetophenone phenylhydrazone of the formula either by means of a dehydrating agent, e.g. polyphosphoric or sulphuric acid, or by thermolysis. The novel compounds may be used as stabilizers for homopolymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride. The acetophenone derivative of Formula III above is suitably prepared by reacting a benzene derivative of the formula with α-chloroacetyl chloride. The acetophenone phenylhydrazone of Formula VII above is suitably prepared by reacting a substituted acetophenone of the formula with a substituted phenylhydrazine of the formula
