titleOfInvention Polyurethane structural member
abstract 1488291 Polyurethane structural member GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 21 March 1975 [10 July 1974] 11933/75 Heading C3R A structural member, such as a facia for automobiles, composed of a set liquid reaction mixture which goes from a liquid to a set state in less than 4 minutes and exhibits free NCO groups at the time it is removed from the mould, and having the structural characteristics of an ASTM tear (p.l.i.) of 440-600, an ASTM tangent modulus of elasticity (p.s.i.) at -20‹ F. of 83,000Œ1000, at 75‹ F. of 27,000Œ6000 and at 158‹ F. of 5000Œ1000 and a sag measured after one hour at 250‹ F. of less than 0À3 inches and an ASTM Shore D hardness of 56Œ3, is prepared from a liquid polyether urethane forming reaction mixture comprising a mixture of 86-104 p.b.w. of a prepolymer of methane-di(phenylisocyanate) and tripropylene ether glycol, dipropylene ether glycol or another polyether diol having a M.Wt. below 1000, the prepolymer having 12-32% wt. of free NCO groups, 82- 78 p.b.w. of polypropylene ether triol, said triol having been obtained by condensing propylene oxide on a triol generator selected from trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane and glycerol and capping with 10-25 mole per cent of ethylene oxide to give a M.Wt. of 4000-7000, 14-25 p.b.w. of a C 2 -C 4 diol, preferably 1,4- butane diol, and 0-10 p.b.w. of a blowing agent selected from halohydrocarbons boiling below 110‹ F. or water to give a density of 50- 70 pounds per cubic foot. A one shot process is generally used. In the example a polyetherurethane facia is prepared by injecting into an epoxy resin fibreglass impregnated mould at 100-140‹ F. a reaction mixture comprising an ethylene oxide capped propylene oxide adduct of trimethylolpropane of M.Wt. 6000, 1,4- butane-diol, dibutyltin dilaurate, triethylene diamine, carbon black pigment and a prepolymer of methane-di(phenylisocyanate) and either dipropylene ether glycol or tripropylene ether glycol. The resulting congealed part is stripped from the mould and oven-cured.
