titleOfInvention Method for increasing the hydrophilicity of a silicone rubber surface
abstract 1487965 Rendering silicone rubber hydrophilic by glow discharge treatment. AGFAGEVAERT AG 25 Oct 1974 [25 Oct 1973] 46285/74 Addition to 1362939 Heading C3T The surface of a body of silica-filled silicone rubber is rendered hydrophilic by mounting it on an electrode of a gas glow discharge apparatus and subjecting the surface at a temperature not exceeding 60‹ C. to bombardment by ions and electrons produced by glow discharge through an atmosphere in the apparatus consisting substantially wholly of oxygen at 10<SP>-1</SP> to 10<SP>-3</SP> Torr, the kinetic energy of the oxygen ions being such as to create a surface layer on the body of SiO 2 from decomposed silicone rubber and exposed silica filler. The oxygen preferably contains 0À1-1% water vapour, and the treated surface may subsequently be treated with water or water vapour at 80‹ C. for 12 or more hours. In the Example a 2 cm. x 5 mm. disc of benzoylperoxide-cured silicone rubber is placed on one of two electrodes 25 cm. apart and subjected to a discharge of I mA/cm.<SP>2</SP> through O 2 at 10-1 Torr for 2 mins.; the disc is then boiled in water for 24 hours.
