titleOfInvention Combustion gas generator
abstract 1487944 Combustion gas generators THIOKOL CORP 19 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973] 50074/74 Heading F1L The invention relates to a combustion gas generator such as for use for inflating the safety cushion of a vehicle. The gas generator comprises an outer casing formed of two parts 22, 26 which are in screwed engagement, the cover part 26 being formed with gas discharge outlets 28 which are radially directed. An inner cylindrical casing 18 is disposed within the outer casing to define an annular space 29 therebetween, the casing 18 being formed with openings 20. A frangible container 12 is disposed within the inner casing, the container being hermetically sealed and containing a gas generating material 10. An ignition squib 4 is located centrally within the gas generator and is surrounded by pyrotechnic material 5 which is contained within a perforated enclosure 6 which is enclosed within a frangible member 9. A fine filter 16 and a coarse filter 17 are located between the gas generating material 10 and the container 12. A cooling device 30 is disposed in the annular space 29 between the cylindrical casing 18 and the outer casing 22, 26, the cooling device being in the form of a spirally wound wire screeen. The cooling device is located between end walls 32, 33 which are apertured at 34 for combustion gas flow. A material 31 is disposed between the wall 33 and a further wall 35 for neutralizing the combustion gases. In the event of an impact being sensed, the squib 4 is fired followed by ignition of the pyrotechnic material 5. At a certain pressure the frangible member 9 bursts, and the gases pass to the gas generating material 10 which is thereby ignited. At a certain pressure the frangible container 12 bursts at the openings 20, the gases pass across the neutralizing material 31, then across the cooling device 30 and finally discharge through the radial openings 28 to inflate the safety cushion. The casing 22, 26 is formed with a mounting flange 24 and is concavely shaped at 22 to facilitate mounting adjacent a steering column. The gas generating material 10 may be a mixture of 55% sodium azide and 45% anhydrous chromic chloride. The neutralizing material 31 may be powdered iron sulphate, and the pyrotechnic material 5 may be a mixture of 25% boron and 75% potassium nitrate.
