titleOfInvention Fibre/metal composite materials
abstract 1485896 Carbon fibres FIBER MATERIALS Inc 9 Dec 1975 [15 Sept 1975] 50375/75 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] C fibres coated with SiC and SiO 2 are used in forming a metal composite containing the dispersed fibres. The fibres may be coated by (a) reacting gaseous SiCl 4 with H 2 and an oxygen containing gas at 600-1800‹ C. or (b) by reacting SiCl 4 with H 2 and then oxidizing by heating in an oxygen containing gas or (c) by sputtering and vacuum ion plating. The coating thickness is preferably 100-10,000 Š and the fibres may be dispersed in a matrix of Al, Mg, Ti, Ni or their alloys either by mixing with the metal powder and pressing and sintering or by infiltration with the molten metal. If the infiltration process is used the coated fibres are preferably coated with TiB 2 -TiC by reaction of TiCl 4 and BCl 3 before infiltration. A sintered composite is preferably formed by mixing the fibres with Al or Ti powder, sealing the mixture under vacuum in an Al or Ti tube and then draining the heated tube to 50% reduction.
