titleOfInvention | Treatment of droplet dispersions |
abstract | 1485622 Coalescing FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd 18 Oct 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 51332/73 Headings B1D and B1T A dispersion of a liquid in a gas or in another liquid, e.g. kerosene in water, wherein the dispersed droplets are below 100 Á dia. is coalesced by passage through a porous element, comprising an upstream layer of bonded fibres supported by a downstream substrate of foam-structured ceramic to which it may optionally be bonded, the coalesced dispersion is then separated by gravity. The fibres may be any of a long list of plastics, wool, silk, cotton, glass, asbestos, slag wool, silica, alumina, zirconia, glass-ceramic or mixtures thereof, preferably aluminosilicate. They are bonded together by sintering, possibly using a laser, electron beam or ionic plasma, by solvent welding or by any of a long list of adhesives. In an example, a sheet of foamed polyurethane is dipped in a ceramic suspension, dried and fired to produce a foam-structure ceramic square. The square is mounted across a box which is filled with a suspension of colloidal silica to level with the upper face of the square, on to which is poured a slurry of aluminosilicate fibres in colloidal silica suspension. The box is rocked and drained, then vacuum is applied'to its interior and the fibrous layer on the ceramic square is pressed with a perforate platen. The resulting integral structure, bonded by the silica, is cut to form a disc which is mounted in an acrylic frame. |
