titleOfInvention Method for decorative colouring of glass
abstract 1485030 Colouring glass or glass-ceramic NIPPON SHEET GLASS CO Ltd 6 Dec 1974 [8 Dec 1973 20 Feb 1974] 52904/74 Heading C1M An article of glass or glass-ceramic containing at least one alkali metal oxide and sulphide sulphur is decoratively coloured by applying to the surface of the article a composition comprising: (i) at least one compound of Ag and/or Cu, and (ii) V 2 O 5 or a compound which forms V 2 O 5 on heating, and heating the coated article to obtain the desired coloration. The composition, which may be applied as a powder, paste or slurry, may also contain water and methylcellulose. The heating may be at 580-1000‹ C. for at least 3 minutes. Preferably the total amount of Cu compounds and/or silver compounds is 0À2-2 mg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, and the amount of vanadium compound 0À4-2À5 mg./cm.<SP>2</SP>. The article treated may be of glass, crystallizable glass or glass-ceramic. When a crystallizable glass or glass-ceramic is used, the composition is applied as a paste which also contains a dispersing agent and diluent. The coated article is then heated to develop coloured layers in the article's surface (and to crystallize the glass if necessary). Desired coloured patterns are obtained by selectively removing surface layers of the article (e.g. to a depth of 400Á) by etching, polishing or engraving. The diluent may be water, and the dispersing agent may be talc, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 or clay. In either embodiment the silver compound may be AgNO 3 , AgCl, Ag 2 SO 4 or Ag 2 CrO 4 , and the copper compound Cu(NO 3 ) 2 .3H 2 O, CuCl, CuCl 2 or CuSO 4 . The vanadium compound may be NH 4 VO 3 or V 2 O 5 .
