titleOfInvention Poly-(carboxylate)cements
abstract 1484454 Acrylic acid copolymer solutions; dental cements NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Aug 1974 [21 Aug 1973] 39383/73 Heading C3P A cement-forming liquid suitable for use as a component of a poly(carboxylate) cement comprises an aqueous solution of a water-soluble copolymer of acrylic acid, the copolymer having an average molecular weight of less than 20,000, and the solution having a viscosity (measured with a falling sphere viscometer at 21‹ C.) of 5-40 poise. The acrylic acid is preferably copolymerized with itaconic acid; other suitable acidic and non-acidic comonomers are also disclosed. The liquid is suitably prepared by polymerizing acrylic acid with a comonomer in aqueous solution at a temperature above 85‹ C. in the presence of an initiator, e.g. ammonium persulphate, and a chain transfer agent, e.g. isopropanol. In another aspect, the invention relates to a poly(carboxylate) cement pack comprising as one component a water-soluble copolymer of acrylic acid, the copolymer having a molecular weight as specified above and a 20-65% by weight aqueous solution thereof having a viscosity as specified above; and as another component an ion-leachable cement powder which will react with the copolymer component in the presence of water to give a plastic mass which hardens to form a cement. The copolymer component is suitably in the form of an aqueous solution and the cement powder may be, for example, zinc oxide, optionally including a small proportion of another metal oxide (e.g. magnesium oxide), a fused oxide mixture, an oxide glass or, preferably, a fluoroaluminosilicate glass. Optional additives include fluorides, bacteriostatic agents and antibiotics. In addition to dental applications, the cements are also useful in surgery, particularly orthopaedic surgery.
