titleOfInvention | Fire retardant unsaturated polyesters |
abstract | 1482092 Fire-retardant unsaturated polyesters HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 15 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 31181/74 Heading C3P A fire-retardant polymer composition which contains substantially no phosphorus comprises (i) an unsaturated polyester, (ii) a copolymerizable monomer, wherein said polyester contains at least 4 weight per cent of halogen, based on (i) plus (ii), and (iii) as fire retardant up to 5 weight per cent, based on (i) plus (ii), of iron, an iron compound which is insoluble in a mixture of (i) plus (ii), or an iron compound which is soluble in (i) plus (ii) but does not contain ironto-carbon bonds. In the examples the polyester resins consists of styrene monomer solutions of (I) ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol esterified with maleic anhydride and 1,4,5,6,7,7- hexachlorobicyclo - (2.2.1) - 5 - heptene - 2,3- dicarboxylic anhydride; (II) propylene glycol esterified with the anhydrides of (I); (III) propylene glycol esterified with fumaric acid and tetrachlorophthalic anhydride; (IV) the glycol mixture of (I) esterified with maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride, tetrabromophthalic anhydride and sodium acetate; (V) ethylene glycol and glycerol esterified with chlorendic acid, maleic anhydride and 1,2-dibromopropanol, and the iron compounds used are yellow, red and black iron oxide, ferric acetate, ferric formate, ferrous tartrate, ferric sulphate, ferric tungstate, ferric ferrocyanide, ferric molybdate, ferric borate, ferrous stannate, ferrous tungstate, ferrous chloride, ferrous sulphate, ferrous ammonium sulphate, ferric chlorendate, ferric acrylate, ferric hexachlonorobornene carboxylate, and ferric acetylacetonate with comparative examples utilizing, phosphorus-containing iron compounds (ferric glycerophosphate, ferrous and ferric phosphate. The compositions may contain reinforcing agents, fillers and stabilizers. |
