titleOfInvention Foamed polymers
abstract 1480132 Rigid polyisocyanurate foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 May 1975 [13 June 1974] 26258/74 Heading C3R Rigid polyisocyanurate foams are prepared by admixing an oxyalkylated tolylene diamine having a hydroxyl value of 150-600 mg. KOH/g., a blowing agent, a catalyst for the trimerization of isocyanates, a filler and a crude diisocyanatodiarylalkane composition containing from 5- 70% by weight of polyaryl polyalkylene polyisocyanates of functionality greater than two, said composition being present in such an amount as to provide from 3-10 equivalents of isocyanate groups per equivalent of active hydrogen. The crude isocyanate compositions are prepared by the phosgenation of crude diaminodiarylalkanes which are prepared by the reaction of aromatic amines with an aldehyde or ketone. Preferred blowing agents are inert low boiling point liquids, preferably having a B.Pt. not exceeding 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure, e.g. halogenated hydrocarbons and are usually employed in amounts of 5-40% wt. of the polyisocyanate. Water may optionally be used in amounts of up to 2% wt. of the polyisocyanate. Suitable catalysts are strong bases, e.g. quaternary ammonium hydroxides, alkali metal hydroxides and alkoxides; weakly basic catalysts, e.g. alkali metal salts of carboxylic acids, certain tertiary amines, and non-basic metal salts of carboxylic acids. The catalyst is preferably used in an amount of from 0À1 to 5% wt. of the crude isocyanate composition. The filler may be any inorganic or organic filler, e.g. china clay, optionally modified by treatment with an amine, or an intumescing filler, e.g. heat-expandable graphite, vermiculite and sucrose. The filler is generally used in amounts of 2-40% wt. of the total foam-forming ingredients. Optional ingredients include minor amounts of other polyols, e.g. ethylene glycol and 1,4-butane diol; materials to use in conjunction with the trimerization catalyst which are not by themselves capable of trimerizing isocyanates, e.g. tertiary amines in which the nitrogen atom is attached to aliphatic carbon atoms, certain organic metal compounds, e.g. stannous octoate and dibutyltin dilaurate, and epoxides; surface active agents or foam stabilizers, e.g. siloxane-oxyalkylene copolymers and ethylene oxide-propylene oxide block copolymers, flameretardants, e.g. tris chloro-ethyl (or propyl) phosphate and antioxidants. In the examples foams are prepared from an oxypropylated 80/20 2,4-/2,6-tolylenediamine mixture, a polyoxypropylene - polyoxyethylene block copolymer, potassium acetate, a siloxane-polyalkylene oxide copolymer, water, ethylene glycol, trichlorofluoromethane and a diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition containing 55% wt. of diisocyanato diphenylmethane isomers the remainder being mainly polymethylene polyphenyl polyisocyanates of functionality greater than 2, and either powdered sucrose or expandable graphite or china clay. The foams are used to make a steel-faced foam-cored laminate and are fire-retardant.
