titleOfInvention | Process for the polymerisation of allyl amine salts |
abstract | 1479664 Free-radical polymerization of allylamine salts ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd and COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 7 June 1974 [12 June 1973] 25424/74 Heading C3P Weakly basic ion exchange resins for use in manufacturing thermally regenerable amphoteric ion exchange resins are made by polymerizing a composition comprising an allyl amine salt of a strong acid, the allyl amine containing two or more allyl groups, by reacting the composition in the presence of either (a) a free radical initiator which yields organic and/or inorganic free radicals, wherein any inorganic free radicals are uncharged and any organic free radicals do not contain covalently bound charged groups or (b) a free radical initiator containing the azobis(isobutyramidinium) cation, the reaction being carried out at - 20 to 80 C. and at pH 0-5 in the absence of oxygen. Preferred initiators are H 2 O 2 , acetyl peroxide, bis(1-hydrocyclohexyl peroxide), tbutyl hydroperoxide, 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile, azobis(isobutyramidinium hydrochloride), redox systems comprising a transition metal ion, e.g. Fe<SP>++</SP> or Ti<SP>+++</SP> with hydrogen peroxide, hydroxylamine or an organic hydroperoxide. The allylamine salt may be derived from triallylamine, 1,4 - bis(N,N - diallylaminomethyl) benzene, N - (4 - N,N - dimethylaminobenzyl)- diallylamine, N - (4 - N,N - dimethyl - aminomethylbenzyl) - diallylamine, N - (4 - N,N- diallylaminomethylbenzyl) - diallylamine, N- (4 - N,N - dipropylaminomethylbenzyl) - diallylamine, N - (4 - N,N - diisopropylaminomethylbenzyl) - diallylamine, alkyldiallylamine, bis(N,N - diallylamino) - alkane, 1,6- bis(N,N - diallylamino) - hexane, with hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric or phosphoric acids or mixtures thereof. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,394,486. |
