abstract | 1478943 Coating carbon fibres FIBER MATERIALS Inc 9 Jan 1975 976/75 Heading C7F [Also in Divisions B3 and E1] A metallic matrix is reinforced by carbon fibres coated with titanium boride &/or titanium carbide. The metal matrix is aluminium, magnesium, lead, zinc, copper tin, aluminium-silicon or alloys of these metals. The fibres are preferably graphite and the thickness of the coating 21 is preferably 100-10,000 Angstroms. A preferred method of forming the fibre-reinforced metal composite comprises the steps of: forming a coating of titanium boride or a mixture of titanium carbide and titanium boride by reduction of a gaseous compound of titanium, e.g. TiCl 4 and a gaseous compound of boron, e.g. BCl 3 with a gaseous reducing medium, e.g. zinc vapour in the presence of the fibres and then immersing the coated fibres in molten metal. |
