titleOfInvention Electrolytic reduction of aromatic steroids
abstract 1478679 Electrolytic reduction of #<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP>- to #<SP>2</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP>-steroids SCHERING AG 17 July 1974 [18 July 1973] 31660/74 Heading C2U [Also in Division C7] #<SP>2</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP>-Steroids containing an etherified hydroxy group in the 3-position are prepared from #<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP>- steroids containing the same group in the 3-position by electrolysis in liquid ammonia in either (a) a divided cell in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a strong acid (of pK < 5) or (b) an undivided cell in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a weak acid (of pK value 5-32). The strong acid salt may, for example, be a halide, tetrafluoroborate, sulphate or perchlorate and the weak acid salt may for example be an alkali metal salt of aniline, hydrazine, alcohol or water. The undivided cell may also contain an alkali metal salt of a strong acid. In examples estrone methyl ether is reduced to 3 - methoxy - #<SP>2</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP> - estradien - 17# - ol; 3- methoxy - #<SP>1,3,5,(10),8</SP> - estratetraen - 17# - ol to the corresponding #<SP>2</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP>-estradiene; dl-3- methoxy - 18 - methyl - #<SP>1,3,5,(10),8</SP> estratetraen- 17 - one to dl - 3 - methoxy - 18 - methyl- #<SP>2,5(10)</SP> - estradien - 17# - ol; 3 - methoxy- #<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP> - 19 . nor - pregnatrien - 17α - ol - 20- one 20-ethyleneketal to the corresponding #<SP>2,5(10)</SP> - 19 - nor - pregnadiene; 3 - methoxy- #<SP>1,3,5(10),9(11) </SP>- estratetraen - 17# - ol to the corresponding #<SP>2,5(10)</SP> - estradiene; and 3- methoxy - 17 - ethylenedioxy - #<SP>1,3,5(10)</SP> - estratriene to the corresponding #<SP>2</SP>'<SP>5(10)</SP>-estradiene. Also, 3 - methoxy - 17# - t - butoxy - #<SP>1,3,5(10),9(11)</SP>- estratetraene is reduced and the product is hydrolysed to 19-nor-testosterone.
