titleOfInvention | Aqueous dispersion thermosetting coating compositions |
abstract | 1476386 Aqueous dispersion coating compositions DESOTO Inc 7 Nov 1974 [15 Aug 1974] 48301/74 Headings C3P and C3R Aqueous dispersion thermosetting coating compositions comprise water having dispersed therein (1) an aqueous emulsion copolymer of (a) 0À75-25% by weight of a non-nitrogenous monoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing alcoholic hydroxy function, (b) 0À1- 15% by weight of a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer having carboxylic function and (c) a balance of monoethylenically unsaturated monomer free of functional groups capable of reacting with an aminoplast resin; (2) 3-40% by weight, based on resin solids, of an aminoplast resin; and 5-50 parts, per 100 parts by weight of copolymer, of a water dispersible high boiling adduct of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol having 2-4 hydroxy groups with a C 2 - C 4 monoepoxide or a lactone having 3-6 carbon atoms, said adduct having a molecular weight of about 300 to about 6000. The polyether or polyester adduct (3) serves to improve room temperature coalescence and reflow on baking, maintains hardness of the coatings, and enhances flexibility and gloss. The compositions may be pigmented (e.g. with titanium dioxide) or clear and may also include other components such as dyes or waxes. In an example, component (1) is a styrene/2-ethylhexyl acrylate/2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer, component (2) is hexamethoxymethyl melamine, and component (3) is a polyoxypropylene adduct of propylene glycol of molecular weight 425; the composition being coated on a steel panel and baked at 350‹ F. |
