abstract 1476340 Coloured coatings ROHM & HAAS CO 11 June 1974 [16 July 1973] 25782/74 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Leather and other substrates are coated with compositions comprising (a) a metal chelate dye and/or acid dye and (b) one or more 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic tertiary amines of the formula where A is O or S, R<SP>1</SP> is a monovalent organic radical, R<SP>2</SP> is H or alkyl, R<SP>3</SP> is H, phenyl, benzyl or alkyl, or R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a 5- or 6-membered hydrocarbyl ring, and n is 1 or 2; and/or when (b) is monomeric and addition polymerisable (i.e. R<SP>1</SP> contains olefinic unsaturation) one or more copolymers of such monomeric amines with one or more of the following monomers: monomers of the formula wherein R<SP>7</SP> is H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl and R<SP>8</SP> is a radical having 2-14 carbon atoms, andmonomers of the formula wherein R<SP>9</SP> and R<SP>10</SP> are the same or different and are H, halogen, C 1 -C 4 alkanoyloxy, cyano, formyl, phenyl, carbamoyl or epoxy radicals. In the formula for the heterocyclic amine, R<SP>1</SP> is preferably a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group or an acryloxy- or C 1 -C 4 alkacryloxy-(C 1 -C 4 alkyl) group. The compositions are suitably used in the form of solutions wherein, when component (b) is a liquid, sufficient thereof is used to dissolve component (a) or, alternatively, the two components are dissolved in a conventional solvent, e.g. a ketone, ester, ether, aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or aromatic hydrocarbon. A nonionic surfactant may additionally be included to aid dispersion of any non-dissolved portion of the dye component. The dye compositions are particularly useful in coating compositions containing reactive (i.e. free isocyanate group-containing) urethane polymers or prepolymers. Applications include the coating of leather and other substrates. In Examples the dye compositions are used together with reactive urethane prepolymer and either a reactive acrylic polymer or nitrocellulose, the component (b) being a monomeric 1, 3-oxazolidine compound or a copolymer of 2-(oxazolidin-3-yl)-ethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and optionally n-butyl acrylate.
