abstract | 1475261 Production of fibrous crystals NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 March 1976 [2 April 1975] 13456'75 Heading B1S An element of aligned individual fibrous crystals, of e.g. #-calcium metasilicate, is produced by feeding a rod 1 of the silicate material to a molten zone 2 held in a heated platinum coil 3 and when first formed a platinum wire probe is introduced into the melt to commence drawing of the melt. Nucleation thus occurs across the drawn element 12 and if the speed at which the melt is drawn is within the correct limits the melt will crystallise in the form of fibrous crystals with a silicate chain structure. The Fig. also shows the temperature profile 4 through the molten zone; while the curves 5 and 6 represent crystal growth rate profiles. The element can be readily manipulated to disintegrate into small clumps of fibrous crystals. |
