titleOfInvention Mannich base/aminoalkyl-meth-acrylate salt copolymers
abstract 1474746 Mannich base/quaternized aminoalkyl(meth)acrylate copolymers BAYER AG 9 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 39262/74 Heading C3P A copolymer comprising (i) 85-95% by weight of polymer units of a Mannich base of formula wherein R is H, CH 3 : R 1 is hydroxyalkyl of 2-3 carbon atoms; R 2 is C 1-2 alkyl or R 1 , or R 1 and R 2 , taken with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, represent a pyrrolidine, morpholine, N-methylpiperazine or N-ethylpiperazine ring; (ii) 15-5% by weight of polymer units of an aminoalkyl(meth)acrylate of formula wherein R is H, CH 3 ; A is alkylene of 2-4 carbon atoms; R 3 is H or C 1-4 alkyl; R 4 and R 5 are C 1-4 alkyl; X<SP>(-)</SP> is a negative group capable of salt formation with the amine nitrogen (preferably R is H or CH3, A is ethylene, R 3 is H, R 4 and R 5 are CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , X is chlorine) which may be prepared by (i) copolymerization of 80- 95% by weight of (meth)acrylamide and 5 to 20% by weight of a salt of a tertiary or quaternary aminoalkyl(meth)acrylate in 1-10% by weight oxygen-free aqueous solution in the presence of a redox system of 0À005-0À1% by weight, based on the monomer mixture, of a water-soluble peroxy compound and 0À005-1% by weight, based on the monomer mixture, of a compound having at least one primary amino group or a water-soluble salt thereof (cyclohexylamine, aminoethylmethacrylate hydrochloride, or isobutylamine) at 10-40‹ C., optionally in the presence of up to 10% by weight of a water-soluble metal salt, and reacting at ambient temperature the copolymer with formaldehyde in the presence of a secondary alkyl amine having at least one hydroxyalkyl group or in the presence of a secondary heterocyclic amine wherein the ratio of formaldehyde to amine is between 1 : 1 and 5 : 1; or (ii) copolymerization of a Mannich base of (meth)- acrylamide with a tertiary or quaternary aminoalkyl(meth)acrylate. The copolymer exemplified is acrylamide/diethylaminoethylmethacrylate hydrochloride which is reacted with the reaction product of formaldehyde and (1) 2- methylaminoethanol, (2) 1-methylamino-2-propanol, (3) diethanolamine, (4) morpholine, (5) pyrrolidine, (6) N-methylpiperazine.
