titleOfInvention | Aqueous dispersions of ethylene/vinyl chloride interpolymers and rosin material |
abstract | 1474442 Laminates MONSANTO CO 4 Nov 1974 [5 Nov 1973] 47536/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Flexible organic films, e.g. of polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, are bonded and heat-sealed to various substrates, e.g. glass, polyester, nylon, polyvinyl chloride and cellulosic substrates, such as fabric, paper and wood by an adhesive formed from an aqueous dispersion comprising an aqueous continuous phase and a dispersed phase which comprises (1) 5-65 parts by weight of an ethylene/vinyl chloride interpolymer per 100 parts by weight of the dispersion and (2) for every part of the interpolymer, 0À05-4 parts by weight of a rosin material. The aqueous dispersion may be applied to either or both of the surfaces to be joined, either to the whole surface(s) or to selected portions. The composite structure is then placed in an apparatus which presses and heat seals the film to the substrate. The rosin material may be abietic acid in substantially pure form, wood rosin, gum rosin, tall oil rosin, disproportionated rosin, hydrogenated rosin, rosin esters, polymerized rosin, modified and/or fortified rosins, and rosin dyes. Specific interpolymers disclosed are ethylene (E)/vinyl chloride (VCL)/acrylamide (A); E/VCl/N- methylolacrylamide; E/VClfA/N - isopropylacrylamide; E/VCl/A/N - ethylmethacrylamide; E/VCl/A/diammonium itaconate; E/VCl/A/ monobutyl acid maleate; E/VCl/N - methylolacrylamide/N - isobutoxymethylacrylamide; E/VCl/A/sodium acrylate; and E/VCl/A/sodium methacrylate. |
