abstract 1473994 Acetals and thioacetals of hydroxyphenalkyl aldehydes CIBA-GEIGY AG 20 Jan 1975 [21 Jan 1974] 2327/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises compounds of general Formula I in which R 1 and R 5 are independently hydrogen atoms or C 1-6 alkyl groups; one of R 2 and R 3 is OH the other being an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group; R 4 is hydrogen, or if R 3 is OH, also denotes an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group; X denotes a group in which R 8 is an alkyl, aralkyl or phenyl group and R 9 is an alkyl, aralkyl or phenyl group or a group of Formula A or R 8 and R 9 together are alkylene; Y 1 and Y 2 are independently oxygen or sulphur atoms; p denotes 1 or 2; q denotes 0 or 1 provided that p + a = 2; when q is 0 R 6 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, thiaalkyl or oxaalkyl in which Y 1 is separated from the S or O atom by at least two carbon atoms, hydroxycarbonylalkyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, cycloalkoxycarbonylalky, aralkoxycarbonylalkyl, aryloxycarbonylalkyl or a group wherein m is 2 to 10 and R 10 is an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, thiaalkyl, oxaalkyl or aryl group, or if q is O or Y 1 is sulphur R 6 can also be an aryl radical or if q is 1 R 6 together with R 7 denotes a 1,2-alkylene, 1,3-alkylene, o-arylene or 1,8-naphthylene radical which may be prepared by reacting one mole of a compound of Formula II with two moles of a compound of formula or with one mole of a glycol, monothioglycol, dithioglycol, o-hydroxyarylene, o-dimercaptoarylene or o-hydroxymercaptoarylene of formula or of formula or of Formula VI The compounds of Formula I defined above have application as agents for the protection of substrates such as polymers, e.g. polypropylene, polyamide 6, polyacrylonitrile or ABS polymer, which are sensitive to oxidative.
