titleOfInvention Process and catalyst for preparation of lactones
abstract 1473940 Catalyst composition EASTMAN KODAK CO 4 Sept 1974 [4 Sept 1973 23 July 1974] 38654/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] A catalyst for producing 2, 2-disubstituted propiolactones from isoanhydrides and formaldehydes consists of the metal oxide-silica gel complex formed by heating the calcined residue of a mixture of silica gel and a water soluble salt of tantalum, titanium, niobium or zirconium to a temperature of 650-1000‹C in the presence of water vapour. Suitably, the catalyst is formed by mixing a solution of the metal salt with the silica gel, evaporating away the water, calcining at 400-600‹C and then heating in water vapour.
