abstract | 1473851 Carboxylated rubber latex INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 5 Aug 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 36884/73 Heading C3P A two-stage continuous process for the production of carboxylated rubber latex comprises continuously supplying to a first reactor at 70-85‹ C. (a) a mixture of monomers comprising a conjugated diene, a non-carboxylic monomer and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, (b) a source of peroxy disulphate ions, (c) an alhali metal or ammonium alkyl aryl sulphonate emulsifier, (d) an alkali metal or ammonium electrolyte or the reaction product of such an electrolyte with an unsaturated carboxylic acid and (e) water and polymerizing the monomers therein for an average residence time of 3-5 hours, continuously transferring reaction mixture to at least one subsequent reactor at 85-100‹ C. The total residence time is 6-10 hours. Preferably (b), (c) and (d) are such that sodium, potassium and ammonium ions are all present and (c) may be used in conjunction with a toluene sulphonate. Examples describe the production of butadiene/styrene or acrylonitrile/ itaconic, acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, maleic, crotonic or 3-butene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid copolymers. |
