abstract | 1472149 3 - Methyl - 2 - (4<SP>1</SP> - halophenyl)- butyronitriles SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 21 Nov 1975 [26 Nov 1974] 47919/75 Heading C2C 3 - Methyl - 2 - (4<SP>1</SP> - halophenyl) - butyronitriles are obtained by alkylating a p-halophenylacetonitrile with an isopropyl halide in the presence of an organic quaternary ammonium salt as catalyst and an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution. Specified quaternary ammonium salts are triethylbenzylammonium chloride, bromide, iodide and hydroxide, trimethylbenzylammonium chloride and bromide, tetrabutylammonium chloride and bromide, 3- phenoxybenzyltriethylammonium bromide, tripropylbenzeneammonium chloride, triethylpropylammonium bromide, cetyltriethyl ammonium bromide, m-octyltrimethylammonium chloride, and p-methoxybenzyltriethylammonium chloride. The concentration of the aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution is preferably within the range 10 to 70% by weight. The isopropyl halide can be used in any molar amount greater than 1À0 mole of isopropyl halide per mole of phenylacetonitrile. A solvent may be employed in the process. |
