titleOfInvention Liquid autoxidisable fatty acid esters
abstract 1471611 Polyesters DULUX AUSTRALIA Ltd 17 May 1974 [18 May 1973] 21995/74 Heading C2C Liquid, non-polymeric, autoxidizable esters of an autoxidizable fatty acid and a polyol also comprising acrylyl or methacrylyl residues, with molecular weight, 1500-3000, A.V. 45- 75 mg. KOH/g. provided by carboxyl groups, 0À8-1À4 acrylyl or methacrylyl groups per molecule, and 3À5-4À5 autoxidizable fatty acid residues per molecule, are prepared by esterifying a polyhydric alcohol with an autoxidizable monocarboxylic fatty acid at a temperature not above 240‹ C., reacting at least some of the hydroxyl groups with an acid anhydride 120- 160‹ C., and reacting a portion of the free carboxyl groups with glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate. Polyols may be di- or tri-pentaerythritols, sorbitol and di-, tri-, and tetradimethylol propionic esters of pentaerythritol; the autoxidizable fatty acids may be derived from natural drying oils such as linseed, soya, safflower, cottonseed and tall oils; acid anhydrides to react with the remaining hydroxyl groups may be maleic, phthalic, trimellitic anhydrides and maleinized linseed oil fatty acid; and glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate are used for the final stage. The compositions may be used, together with catalysts and pigments, as paints. Examples describe the reaction of dimethylol propionic acid, linseed oil fatty acid, pentaerythritol or trimethylol propane, maleinized linseed oil fatty acid, diethyl ether of diethylene glycol and glycidyl methacrylate; linseed oil fatty acid, dipentaerythritol, maleinized linseed oil fatty acid, phthalic anhydride, diethylether of diethylene glycol, and glycidyl methacrylate; dimethylolpropionic acid, linseed oil fatty acid, trimethylol propane, trimellitic anhydride, diethyl ether of diethylene glycol and glycidyl methacrylate, and the use of the products as film forming agents.
