titleOfInvention | Process for the preparation of a sulphone or of a mixture of sulphones |
abstract | 1471186 Sulphones KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 31 May 1974 [2 June 1973] 24314/74 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C7] Sulphones are prepared by electrolysing a solution of SO 2 to form SO 2 <SP>-</SP> ions which are reacted with organic compounds containing one or more atoms or groups replaceable by the SO 2 <SP>-</SP> ions, e.g. halogen compounds, sulphonic acid esters or sulphuric acid esters. Suitable solvents include acetonitrile or an excess of the organic reactant. A substance to promote conductivity may be added, e.g. a tetraalkylammonium salt. The organic reactant may be added before or after the formation of the SO 2 <SP>-</SP> ions. The reaction may be effected in a cell subdivided into an anode chamber and a cathode chamber by means of a diaphragm or an ion exchanger membrane. Examples prepare dibutylsulphone from n-butyl bromide and benzo[c]thiophen dioxide from o-xylylene dibromide. Other specified starting materials are dimethyl sulphate, chloroacetonitrile and chloracetone. |
