titleOfInvention Process for sulphonation of petroleum fractions
abstract 1469442 Sulphonation of petroleum fractions MARATHON OIL CO 14 June 1974 [12 July 1973] 26573/74 Heading C2C Petroleum sulphonates are obtained by a continuous process involving the treatment of petroleum fractions with SO 3 in ethylene dichloride, the process comprising: (a) contacting a first stream comprising said petroleum fraction and a recycle product with a second stream comprising said SO 3 which has previously been mixed with ethylene dichloride, said contacting occurring in a reactor zone in which said streams are impinged at a substantial angle, (b) maintaining the velocity of said first stream at at least four times the velocity of said second stream, both said streams being in turbulent flow, (c) recycling as said recycle product, a portion of the products of said reaction from said reactor zone to a point where they are admixed with said petroleum fraction and thence back to said reactor zone. The volumetric rate of flow of said recycle product stream can be controlled to obtain a velocity ratio within said range. Preferred petroleum fractions have M.W.s from about 250 to about 700, an aliphatic to aromatic proton ratio from about 5 to about 50 and an aromatic content from about 30 to 100%. An apparatus for carrying out the process is described. An example is given in which a heavy gas oil is sulphonated.
